At New River Hope Center, we value collaboration with physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, hospitals, schools, and other healthcare and community professionals. We welcome referrals for individuals and families who may benefit from compassionate, trauma-informed mental health services.

    At New River Hope Center, we value collaboration with physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, hospitals, schools, and other healthcare and community professionals. We welcome referrals for individuals and families who may benefit from compassionate, trauma-informed mental health services.

    How to Refer a Patient

    1. Submit a Referral
    Complete our secure referral form with the patient's basic information, presenting concerns, and any relevant clinical information. Please ensure that you have the appropriate authorization to share protected health information.

    2. We Review the Referral
    Our team will review the referral to determine whether the requested services are appropriate for New River Hope Center and identify the therapist and type of service that may be the best fit.

    3. We Contact the Patient
    When appropriate, we will reach out to the patient or family to discuss services, answer questions, and begin the scheduling and intake process.

    4. Initial Assessment
    The patient will complete an initial assessment with a therapist. This allows us to better understand their needs, establish treatment goals, and determine whether New River Hope Center is an appropriate fit.

    5. Coordinate Care
    When appropriate and with the necessary authorization, we can communicate with referring providers to support continuity of care and coordinate treatment.

  • We currently offer individual therapy, play therapy, and family therapy.

    We accept referrals for a variety of mental health concerns, including:

    • Anxiety and excessive worry

    • Depression and mood concerns

    • Trauma and difficult life experiences

    • Adjustment to major life changes

    • Relationship and family concerns

    • Behavioral and emotional concerns in children

    • Grief and loss

    • Stress and life transitions

    • Other concerns affecting emotional well-being and daily functioning

    Please note: New River Hope Center does not provide stand-alone treatment for alcohol or drug addiction. Patients whose substance use is an active treatment concern must be concurrently engaged in an appropriate substance use treatment or recovery program. Our therapy focuses on the underlying mental health, trauma, relational, and emotional concerns that may contribute to or be impacted by substance use.

  • New River Hope Center does not provide primary or acute treatment for severe mental health conditions such as schizophrenia, psychotic disorders, or other conditions requiring intensive psychiatric management. Having one of these diagnoses does not automatically exclude someone from receiving therapy with us.

    Clients with significant mental health conditions must have an established medical or psychiatric provider who is actively managing their condition, including medication when clinically indicated, and monitoring their symptoms. Acute symptoms must be sufficiently stabilized before beginning therapy at New River Hope Center.

    Once stabilized, our role is to provide supportive therapy focused on the social, emotional, relational, and family concerns that may accompany or be impacted by the diagnosis. We work alongside the client's psychiatric or medical provider, with appropriate authorization, to support coordinated care.

    Please note: New River Hope Center does not replace psychiatric or medical treatment for serious mental health conditions. Medication and ongoing medical/psychiatric monitoring may be an essential component of treatment for these conditions, while our therapy focuses on the individual's emotional well-being, relationships, family functioning, and quality of life.

  • New River Hope Center does not provide primary treatment for alcohol or drug addiction or substance use disorders. We can, however, provide therapy to address underlying mental health concerns, trauma, relationship difficulties, or other experiences that may contribute to or be affected by substance use.

    To receive therapy at New River Hope Center for concerns related to substance use, clients must also be actively participating in a separate substance use treatment program appropriate to their needs, such as an outpatient substance use program, recovery program, or other qualified treatment provider.

    Our role is to address the underlying concerns and support the individual's overall mental health—not to serve as their primary addiction treatment provider. With appropriate consent, we can coordinate care with the client's substance use treatment provider to support a collaborative approach.

Our therapy focuses on the underlying mental health, trauma, relational, and emotional concerns that may contribute to or be impacted by substance use.

  • Providing relevant information with the referral helps us determine the most appropriate next steps. When applicable, please include:

    • Patient name and contact information

    • Date of birth

    • Reason for referral

    • Presenting concerns or symptoms

    • Relevant diagnoses

    • Current medications, if relevant

    • Pertinent medical or behavioral health history

    • Current treatment or services

    • Any immediate safety concerns

    • Insurance information, when available

    • Relevant records or documentation

    Please do not send sensitive patient information through regular email unless the communication method has been specifically designated as secure.

  • New River Hope Center is working to make services accessible to individuals and families across Southwest Virginia. We participate with select Virginia Medicaid Cardinal Care plans and commercial insurance plans, with participation varying by provider and plan.

    Virginia Medicaid / Cardinal Care plans may include:

    Commercial plans may include:

    Insurance should not be the only consideration when making a referral. If a patient is uninsured, underinsured, or unable to afford their expected cost of care, please encourage them to contact us. New River Hope Center has financial assistance options available for individuals and families who qualify.
